Fastnet Race 1979

In the summer of 1979 the Fastnet Race took place. During the race a bad storm blew up. At 3am on 14th August, the Ballycotton lifeboat got a Mayday call that 2 yachts were experiencing steering trouble. The lifeboat was launched under orders of secretary Donie O'Sullivan. One yacht was found outside Cork Harbour and was escorted safely inside Roches Point lighthouse. The crew of the lifeboat were told to proceed to the position of the other yacht, 10 miles southeast off the gas platform. When they were passing the platform one of the crew spotted a yacht, which was demasted. They towed the yacht into Ballycotton. There were many other yachts lost in the race and 19 people lost their lives.
